Ivan Romanovich Zhmaev was born in Tambov in 1743. In 1794 he moved to the Perm province and worked as the manager of the Nevyansk factories P. S. Yakovlev . In 1795 he moved to Perm. On May 15 (27), 1800, Zhmaev began construction of a stone Gostiny Dvor in Perm. He owned 11 of the 60 shops of Gostiny Dvor, 15 salt shops with barns, 6 thousand acres (about 65.5 km 2 ) of land in Osinsky district . In 1805, Zhmaev’s fortune was estimated at 86,600 rubles. On the corner of Siberian and Peter and Paul Streets in Perm, he built a one-story stone house with gazebos, a garden and a greenhouse. In 1842, the house was purchased by Dmitry Emelyanovich Smyshlyaev . During the famous fire of 1842, the building was badly damaged, but then it was restored with the preservation of architectural features, the second floor was added. Now the building is known as the Smyshlyaev House - there is the Perm City Library named after Pushkin. [1] [2]
Ivan Romanovich made large donations for the construction of the Perm Theological Seminary and the stone building of the hospital for the poor. In 1803, at the suggestion of Governor Karl Fedorovich Moderakh , he was granted the rank of college assessor , who gave the right to hereditary nobility. In 1899, Zhmaev was elected burgomaster, and from October 18 (30), 1802 to 1805, he served as the mayor of Perm. [one]
Zhmaev's youngest daughter, Maria, in 1801 married Perm governor treasurer Dmitry Vasilyevich Diaghilev . Their great-grandson, Sergei Pavlovich Diaghilev (1872-1929) became known as a theatrical and artistic figure. [1] [3]
