Biography

Karl Ludwig was born in Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna . The son of Archduke Franz Karl and Sophia of Bavaria . Among his brothers are the Emperor of Austria Franz Joseph and the Emperor of Mexico Maximilian I.

After the death of his nephew, Crown Prince Rudolph, he became heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary , but a few days later transferred this right to his son Franz Ferdinand [5] . However, according to Austrian law, the absentee absentee heir from the throne did not have legal force; either the current emperor (like Ferdinand I ) or the prime heir at the time of the transfer of the throne (like his father Franz Karl) could renounce. Thus, from 1889 to 1896 he was considered the heir to the Austrian throne.

Family

Karl Ludwig was married three times. In 1856, he married Margarita of Saxony ( 1840-1858 ), the daughter of King Johann of Saxony. She died two years later, leaving no children.

The second time he married in 1862 was Maria Annunziat ( 1843 - 1871 ), the daughter of the King of the Two Sicilies, Ferdinand II . Children:

  • Franz Ferdinand ( 1863 - 1914 );
  • Otto Franz ( 1865-1906 );
  • Ferdinand Karl ( 1868 - 1915 );
  • Margarita Sofia ( 1870 - 1902 ), married to Albrecht of Württemberg , son of Duke Philip of Württemberg .

His third wife, whom he married in 1873 , was Maria Teresa Bragança ( 1855 - 1944 ), daughter of the King of Portugal, Miguel . She bore him two daughters:

  • Maria Annunziata ( 1876 - 1961 ), the abbess in Hradcany .
  • Elizaveta Amalia ( 1878 - 1960 ), mother of Prince Franz Joseph of Liechtenstein .

Death

On a trip to Egypt and Palestine, Karl Ludwig drank water from the Jordan River and fell ill. He died of typhoid fever on May 19, 1896 .
