Interzonal women's tournaments are part of the world championship competition, approved by the 39th FIDE Congress ( Lugano , 1968 ). Held from 1971 to 1976 - on the 1st tournament. From 1976 to 1990 - 2 each. The composition of the participants was based on the results of the FIDE zonal tournaments . Participants in the final match of the challengers or one of them - the world champion, who lost her title in the previous round of the competition, was allowed to immediately enter into the matches of the challengers.
The conditions of holding remained unchanged (1971–1982): 3 winners from each interzonal tournament were allowed into the matches of the challengers. At the division of places, additional matches or match tournaments were held between the participants, claiming to reach the final. Since 1985, the winners of the interzonal tournament were allowed into the tournament contenders.
Since 1991, tournaments have been held according to the Swiss system . The last interzonal tournament was held in 1995 .
