Parsons is the son of 1950 Indie 500 winner Johnny Parsons Sr. After his parents divorced, Johnny lived with his mother, her second husband Dwayne Carter, and their sons Dana and Pancho . Dwayne and Pancho were also famous race car drivers.
Parsons, in 1969-1996, made 24 attempts to enter the Indy 500 start. Of the 12 successful attempts, the best were in 1977 and 1985 - 5th place. In 1977, he finished second in the USAC Championship.
