Katyn gained fame as the site of the massacre of Polish captured officers and Soviet citizens by the NKVD authorities, as well as in connection with the crash in 2010 of an airplane aboard which the Polish delegation led by the President of the Republic of Poland flew to visit the Katyn memorial over 70- anniversary of the Katyn execution .
History and title
There are three versions of the origin of the name:
- From the verb to roll , roll (it is possible that the ships on the way from the Varangians to the Greeks rolled on skating rinks from the Dnieper basin to the Western Dvina basin ).
- From Old Russian Katya , Katun (camp, camp, camp).
- From the Belarusian and Ukrainian kat (executioner): in Polish, “Katyn” is a butcher's place [3] . (Smolensk lands were ruled by the Commonwealth from 1618 to 1667.)
