David M. Kurlyand (real middle name is Mendelevich [1] [2] ; February 1, 1913 , Odessa - January 28, 1993 , ibid.) - police lieutenant colonel , employee of the Odessa Criminal Investigation Department , one of the prototypes of David Markovich Gotsman in the TV series “ Liquidation ”.

Biography
David Mendelevich Kurland was born on February 1, 1913 in Odessa. In the family, he was the youngest of three children. After the death of his father, Mendel Evseevich Kurland, in the winter of 1920, he was in orphanage No. 8 (which was located in Maly Lane, and then on Pishonovskaya Street). His elder brother demobilized from the Red Army took him from the children's home. Later he studied at the shoemaker, he graduated from the seven-year school. Joined the Komsomol .
In 1934 he entered the Odessa Criminal Investigation Department, became an assistant to the commissioner. Becoming a policeman, he settled on Sadikovskaya Street, 37 (in Moldavanka ).
In 1941 he participated in the defense of Odessa, then was seconded to Uzbekistan to fight crime, desertion and banditry, also served in Ferghana . Mother Anna Davidovna together with her sister Polina were tortured in the Jewish ghetto of Odessa . The first brother Yevsei was killed in 1941 during the defense of Odessa from the Nazis, and the second brother Moses died in Tashkent in 1942 [3] .
Since the spring of 1943 - served in several front-line task forces of the NKVD . These task forces were staffed mainly from criminal investigation officers and were created to search and detain traitors and policemen who did not evacuate, as well as to assist SMERSH departments and NKGB agencies in finding agents of the enemy in the territories liberated from the enemy.

- in 1948, he became deputy chief of operations;
- from 1953 - Head of the 2nd, then 1st Division of the Police Service;
- since 1958, he has lectured at the Odessa Special Police School of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the USSR for almost ten years;
- Since 1960 - Deputy Head of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Odessa region .
In 1963 he was sent to retirement, and on June 27, 1963, he changed his patronymic to Mikhailovich [3] .
January 28, 1993, died of a heart attack. He was buried at Trinity Cemetery [3] .
Family
Kurland was married to Rita Kurland, they had two children - a son, Anatoly, and a daughter, Valentina. They lived in a communal apartment in the center of Odessa - on Cathedral Square . The daughter was a teacher of mathematics in the Odessa school, the son became a professional military man, he served in the city of Engels .
Rewards and Memories
He was awarded the Order of the Red Star .
In Odessa, David Kurland opened a monument at the entrance to the regional Department of Internal Affairs on the Jewish Street, 12.
