History
The ship was built in 1913 at the Escher Wyss AG factory in Zurich . An unassembled ship was transported to German Friedrichshafen , where it was assembled and launched. Initially, the ship belonged to the Royal Wuttemberg State Railways (Königlich Württembergische Staats-Eisenbahnen). In 1920, all land railways were integrated into the all-German Deutschen Reichsbahn state rail system. Hohentwiel also became the property of Deutschen Reichsbahn.
In the 1950s, Hohentwiel took part in the racing of the passenger ships “Blue Ribbon of Lake Constance”.
In 1962, it was converted into a floating restaurant . In 1984, the steamer was acquired by the Society of the International Museum of Navigation on Lake Constance (Internationales Bodenseeschifffahrtsmuseum eV). It was engaged in the restoration of the vessel, which was in rather poor condition. The restoration was carried out at the expense of the society itself and donations.
Since May 17, 1990, the reconstructed steamer was again used for its intended purpose. Until that time, the ship was German, but after the restoration, the Austrian city became its new port of registry, and the ship began to fly under the Austrian flag.
Now the boat is used for cruises on the lake.
