The softball competition at the XXIX Summer Olympics was held from 12 to 21 August . The tournament was attended by eight women's teams, the men competed in another similar sport - baseball . For the first time in history, the Japanese national team won the softball tournament and beat the victors of the three previous Olympiad athletes from the USA in the final; Traditionally, the Australian team has risen to the podium.
By decision of the International Olympic Committeeon February 9,2006 , softball was excluded from the program of the 2012 Olympic Games , so the Beijing tournament became the last Olympic softball tournament until 2020.

Competitions are held at the Fengtai Softball field stadium.
Event Format
Eight teams compete in the tournament, which consists of two stages. At first, the teams hold a one-round tournament, after which the four best teams go to the playoffs, which is played according to a non-trivial scheme. In the first semi-final, the winner of the group stage plays with the second-place team; the winner of this match goes to the final. In the second semifinal, teams that finished third and fourth in the group play; the winner of this semi-final plays for the right to reach the final with the loser in the first semi-final, the loser gets a bronze medal.

Seven teams qualified through a series of tournaments, and China , as the host country, automatically won the right to compete.
