The main building of the university was built in two stages - in 1934 and 1954. In 1934, according to the project of architect N. Petrov, the left wing was built, and in 1954 the central part and the right wing of the building were completed according to the project of V. Biryukov. [6] Architecturally, the building consists of three parts and was built in classic style features with elements of national decor. [7]
In front of the central three-story risalit is a portico of the main entrance. In its piers there are multifaceted paired and single half-columns with ornamental capitals and developed bases. Arches of the “eastern type” have a complex profile ornamented archivolt. At the developed cornice there are two tiers of curly brackets. The central and corner zones of the parapet are deaf. Between them is placed an arched balustrade. In the center, above the parapet there is a two-figured sculptural composition with the coat of arms. The doors behind the portico have a wide ornamented platband. Two-tier stained-glass windows repeat the contour of arches. Outside the portico, the risalit windows are rectangular with simple platbands. A two-part interfloor belt is placed at the level of the windowsill of the third floor. The main volume of the building is two-story with a basement passing into the basement. The basement walls have a large rustication. Three-columned loggias with square cannulated columns and a simple slabbed capitals were made in the corners. The columns are crowned by a multi-stage developed entablature. Similar columns and pilasters are used in the loggias and the framing of the stained-glass windows of the lobby. The windows of the main and side facades have complex platbands. On the courtyard facade the windows are made without platbands. In its central part, the cornice is broken in the form of a half-front, and pseudo-pilasters with ornamental capitals of the capital are made in the walls of the windows [8] .
In the early 2000s, a large-scale reconstruction of the main building of the university was carried out with the preservation of the main elements of the facade design.
On November 10, 2010, the new State List of Monuments of History and Culture of Local Significance of the city of Almaty was approved, at the same time all previous decisions on this subject were invalidated [9] . In this Decree, the status of a monument of local importance of the building of the main building was preserved. The boundaries of protected areas were approved in 2014 [10] .
