JACK Audio Connection Kit

JACK Audio Connection Kit (often just JACK or JACKIT) - a sound server - a daemon that allows you to connect the so-called “ jackified ” applications with low latency. It is possible to transmit both audio and MIDI data.

Jack can work with ALSA , PortAudio , CoreAudio , FreeBoB , FFADO and (while in test mode) OSS . By 2008, it was possible to run on Linux , FreeBSD, and Mac OS X. The current version also supports Windows .

The name “JACK Audio Connection Kit” is translated into Russian as “Jack Audio Connection Kit” and is a recursive acronym .

JACK Application Examples

Multi-Channel Recording

ALSA tab in qjackctl

Audio tab in qjackctl

Suppose we need to record a multi-channel song with vocals and a synthesizer as instruments. We have a MIDI keyboard , a software (virtual) synthesizer on the computer, as well as a microphone connected to the input of the sound card. For some reason, we want to record both tracks simultaneously. Then, using JACK, we can connect:

  1. MIDI keyboard to a virtual synthesizer;
  2. The sound output of the synthesizer to the audio card (to hear that we are playing);
  3. The sound output of the synthesizer to the corresponding track of the recording program;
  4. The sound input of the audio card (a microphone is connected there) to the corresponding track of the sound recording program.

Accordingly, when we click on the recording, these two tracks will be recorded synchronously.

Duplicate Translation

Another example is not related to recording music. Due to the fact that JACK is supported by any of the well-known video players in Linux (and audio players, of course), you can still connect the microphone to the track of the recording program, but, in addition, also connect this program to the video player. This way you can watch a movie and translate it. Moreover, moving through the film will lead to a similar movement along the recorded sound track and vice versa.

Applications

Here are some “jacked” applications.

  • Aqualung - a music player using GTK
  • Ardor - free DAW- program for Linux
  • Baudline - a signal analysis utility
  • Bitwig Studio - a proprietary professional DAW program
  • CheeseTracker - Impulse Tracker clone
  • ChucK - real-time audio programming language
  • Fluidsynth - software MIDI engine
  • Freqtweak - Digital Equalizer
  • Guitarix - a program for processing the signal of an electric guitar (distortion) and tuning the guitar
  • Hydrogen - an advanced drum machine
  • MusE - Qt -based MIDI / Audio Sequencer
  • Pure Data - a graphical , multimedia programming language
  • qjackctl - Qt-based Jack management tool
  • Rakarrack - emulator, virtual guitar processor
  • Rosegarden is another free DAW program for Linux.
  • SuperCollider - real-time audio programming language
  • XMMS - a free music player for X11
  • XMMS2 - client-server XMMS
  • ZynAddSubFX - an open source software synthesizer
  • TuxGuitar - midi editor, tab editor

Libraries

  • Allegro - a computer game programming library
  • bio2jack - a library that simplifies porting applications that block I / O ( blocked input / out , bio) OSS or ALSA to Jack
  • libjackasyn is a library that converts programs written for the OSS system into programs that understand JACK
