Turret installation , or turret (from fr. Tourelle "turret") - installation for mounting machine guns or small-caliber automatic guns , providing with the help of special systems and power drives their aiming in horizontal and vertical planes .
Turrets are used in the stationary version, as well as on airplanes , tanks , armored vehicles and ships , starting in the 1910s.

Design
The basis of the design is usually a swivel ring, inside which the gunner sits: this removes the main problem of simpler pivot installations, in which horizontal aiming is carried out around an axis, usually passing through the point of attachment of the weapon , which forces the arrow to move around the point of attachment. In addition, in turrets, turret installations made circular firing possible, as the cockpit severely limited the arrow's movement in the case of pivot installations.
In civilian applications, a turret is a device for aiming the mechanisms installed on it (for example, the water gun of an airfield fire engine).
Types
Distinguish:
- open turrets when the gunner and mechanisms are not protected;
- turrets partially covered with thin metal sheets;
- closed (protected) turrets.
