Gargagliani [3] ( Greek Γαργαλιάνοι [2] ) is a small town in Greece . Located at an altitude of 287 meters above sea level [1] , 5 kilometers east of the Ionian coast at the southwestern tip of the Peloponnese , 210 kilometers southwest of Athens , 42 kilometers west of Kalamata and 35 kilometers to west of the airport "Kapitan-Vasilis-Konstandakopakulos" . Included in the community (dim) Trifilia in the peripheral unit of Messinia in the periphery of the Peloponnese . The population of 5007 inhabitants according to the 2011 census [2] . Residents grow olives and grapes [4] .

Located 15 km from Filiatra . Near the city, in the west, off the coast of the Ionian Sea , is the village of Maratopolis , which serves as a port for Gargalliani, 8 km - the island of Proti [4] . The city center is located around Kolokotroni Square. National road 9 runs one kilometer to the west.
Content
History
The region has been inhabited since about 3000 BC. e. It belonged to the ancient city of Pylos , the possession of the mythological king Nestor [5] . During the reign of the Venetians was named Gargaliano ( Italian: Gargaliano ) [6] . Destroyed during the Greek revolution . In the last quarter of the XIX century and at the beginning of the XX century it was the center of raisin production [4] .
In 1912, the Gargalliani community was created.
At the end of August 1935, a strike of winegrowers began, which lasted three days. The government sent two divisions and a warship against the strikers [7] .
