At the first Olympic Games in 1956 in Melbourne, Viktor Kapitonov performed unsuccessfully, he was thirty-second in the road race, the cause of failure was a fall during the race, Soviet cyclists were content with sixth place in the team race. At the next Olympic Games in Rome , as part of the four in the framework of the Capiton team race, he becomes the bronze medalist of the games. In 1975 and 1976 he was named the best coach of the USSR and was awarded a gold medal for preparing the USSR national team for the 1970 World Cup, where she first became the world champion in the team race. Under his leadership, the USSR team won the World Cycling race - 1970-1972, 1975 and 1977.

In 1983 he defended his thesis , receiving a degree of candidate of pedagogical sciences .

He died on March 5, 2005 in Moscow at the 72nd year of his life.
