History

The Polotsk diocese dates back to 992, when the first episcopal department was established here [2] . This event dates back to the reign of Prince Izyaslav , son of Equal-to-the-Apostles Vladimir and Polotsk Princess Rogneda .

In the X-XIII centuries, it included territory with the cities of Vitebsk , Minsk , Izyaslavl , Logoisk , Slutsk , Drutsk , Novogrudok , Orsha , Lukoml .

Since 1391, the department received the status of an archbishopric .

Consisted in canonical jurisdiction: the Kiev-Lithuanian Metropolitanate of the Patriarchate of Constantinople (1315–1329, 1356–1362, 1415–1419); Kiev Metropolis ( 1620 - 1628 ). After the capture of Polotsk in 1563, the troops of Ivan the Terrible for some time passed into the jurisdiction of the Moscow Metropolis .

From October 1596 to October 1620 , from August 1628 to June 1657, the diocese remained without episcopal leadership due to the disappearance of the clergy in the union . In 1662, in connection with the active anti-Orthodox policy of the authorities, the diocese was finally stopped.

In 1833, the diocese was revived and was called Polotsk and Vilna. It included the lands of Vitebsk , Vilensky and Courland provinces . Since 1840, the diocese was called Polotsk and Vitebsk.

In 1840-1856, the Polotsk Theological Seminary operated. In 1856, she was transferred to Vitebsk , but continued to be called Polotsk until December 1871.

By the beginning of World War II, not a single church remained on Polotsk land. The diocese ceased to exist.

During the war, several churches and the Spaso-Efrosinievsky monastery were opened.

In 1955, there were 26 churches in the Vitebsk region, but 10 of them and the Spaso-Evfrosinievsky monastery were closed during the Khrushchev persecution of the Church .

Church life began to be restored only in the late 1980s. On July 6, 1989, the Polotsk diocese was revived.
