Kottak played with many performers, his first recordings were made in the mid-1980s. In 1988-1989, as a drummer, he took part in the recording of two albums of the Kingdom Come band. In 1990, he recorded an album with Michael Lee Firkins . Kottak also participated in performances and recordings of the LA Blues Authority , Michael Schenker Group , Cage , Black Sheep albums.
In 1996 , Kottak became a member of the Scorpions after drummer Herman Rarebell left her. As part of "Scorpions" took part in the recording of six albums.
On May 27, 2011, the Kottak album “ATTACK” was released, the eponymous title is the solo part of James's performance at Scorpions concerts.
Athena Lee's ex-wife is the sister of the famous American musician Tommy Lee .
On April 3, 2014, James Kottak was arrested at a Dubai airport for hooligan behavior due to excessive drinking. A fine of two thousand dirhams was imposed on him, as well as a prison term of one month. [1] . After serving his prison term, Kottak was deported from the UAE . In 2008, the drummer successfully performed in Brazil.
In September 2016, he left Scorpions due to health problems.
