Hit (information technology)

A hit is a request to a web server to retrieve a file ( web pages , images, JavaScript , stylesheets , etc.). When a page is loaded from the server, the number of "hits" or "page hits" is equal to the number of requested files, therefore, one loaded page is not always equal to one hit, because often the pages are composed of images and other files that affect the calculation of the number of hits. Since one page load is not equal to one hit, this is an inaccurate quantity when evaluating the popularity of a website or web traffic . A more accurate estimate of web traffic can be obtained by counting the number of pages viewed on a website. The number of hits is useful in evaluating the requirements for your server depending on the number and size of files that must be transferred in one request. Servers must be tested to ensure that they have satisfactory throughput (they must be able to handle a certain number of hits per second). Also, the value of hits is used to determine the cost of advertising on the resource .

A hit is a request for a file from a web server. The value is obtained only by analyzing the server operation protocols. The number of hits received by the website is often referred to the magnitude of popularity, however this figure is extremely erroneous and significantly overstates. A single web page, as a rule, consists of several (often dozens) files, each of which counts as a hit after loading the page, so the number of hits is actually an arbitrarily large number, reflecting the complexity of individual pages on the website, and not showing the popularity of the resource. Only the number of visitors and page views gives a realistic estimate of popularity.
