Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city’s area is 55.35 km², of which 54.08 km² is land and 1.27 km² is water. Nyark is located on the southern and northern tributaries of the Licking River.

History

Newark was founded in 1802 by William Schenk, D.W. Burnet and John Cummis, settlers from New Jersey. The new city was named after the hometown of Schenk - Newark in New Jersey. In 1808, Licking County was created, and Newark became its administrative center. As the city’s population grew rapidly, it was incorporated by state law in 1833. Holophane , Heisey and Owens Corning Fiberglass were established in a region rich in natural resources (iron, silicon, oil). The building of the district court was built in 1876 [1] [2] .

According to the 2010 census, the population of Newark was 47,573 people (of which 47.8% of men and 52.2% of women), there were 19,840 households and 12,057 families. The racial composition : whites - 92.8%, African Americans - 3.3%, Native Americans - 0.3%, Asians - 0.6 and representatives of two or more races - 2.6% [3] .

Out of 19,840 households, 40.7% were married couples living together (15.3% with children under 18), 14.8% of households were women without husbands, 5.3% of households were men without wives, 39 , 2% had no family. On average, the household was 2.35 people, and the average family size was 2.94 people. 31.9% of the population lived alone, 12.3% were single elderly people (over 65) [3] .

The population of the city in the age range was distributed as follows: 24.0% - residents under 18 years old, 61.5% - from 18 to 65 years old and 14.5% - aged 65 years and older. The average age of the population is 37.3 years. For every 100 women, there were 91.5 men, while for 100 adult women, there were already 87.8 men of comparable age [3] .

In 2014, out of 37,175 able-bodied residents over the age of 16, 21,120 people had a job. At the same time, men had a median income of $ 41,465 per year compared to $ 31,715 of the median income of women. In 2014, the median income per family was estimated at $ 50,695, per household - at $ 36,679. The per capita income is $ 21,388. 18.3% of the total number of families and 22.1% of the total population were at the time of the census below the poverty line [3] .
