LessTif is a free implementation of the Motif interface element library. The name of the project is a pun; Motif sounds like more tif in English , and less tif means less tif . Unlike Motif (paid and proprietary ) and Open Motif (free, but still proprietary), the LessTif library was distributed under the free and open LGPL license.

The ultimate goal of the project was declared full compatibility with Motif at the level and programming interface [1] . This goal has not been achieved; LessTif supported most of the Motif 1.2 interface, but not all parts of the Motif 2.0 and 2.1 interface [2] . However, many Motif apps worked with LessTif with little or no change.
LessTif project appeared when all official Motif versions were paid, and there were many applications using Motif interface elements. In 2000 , a free Open Motif appeared ; however, LessTif developers decided to continue working, because, unlike LessTif, Open Motif did not meet the criteria for open and free software [3] . In August 2006 , Fedora developers decided to completely switch from Open Motif to LessTif [4] . After 2009, the project was abandoned. LessTif library finally lost its relevance after the publication of the original Motif under the LGPL license in 2012.
