Exlibris (from Latin ex libris - “from books”) is a bookmark certifying the owner of the book. The bookplate is pasted or stamped, most often on the left flyleaf . The bookplate indicated on the outside of the book (cover or spine) is called a super exlibris .
Usually, the name and surname of the owner and a drawing are briefly and figuratively speaking about the profession, interests or composition of the owner’s library on the ex-libris. The homeland of the ex-libris is considered to be Germany , where it appeared shortly after the invention of printing.
The simplest exlibris is a paper label with the name of the book owner (sometimes in combination with a motto or emblem). Artistic bookplates are printed works of art . They are created by various engraving techniques - engraved on copper, wood or linoleum, performed in a zinc or lithographic way. Among the authors of artistic ex-libris are such prominent artists as Albrecht Dürer , V. A. Favorsky and many others.
Among the artistic ex-libris are distinguished:
- coat of arms , which reproduce the coat of arms of the owner and are characteristic mainly of the XVI - XVIII centuries . In the USSR, a special interest in coat of arms was seen in the 1920s among the non-emigrated nobility. The latest manifestation of such interest was the Collection of coats of arms ;
- Monogram with ornamentally designed initials of the owner;
- plot , which became most popular in the XIX century and represent images of landscapes, architectural motifs, various emblems, figuratively reflecting the tastes, interests and preferences, the profession of the library owner.
The oldest Russian exlibris is a hand-painted bookplate by Abbot Dosifei , found in the books of the Solovetsky Monastery for 1493-1494.
Bookplates are both a separate area of gathering and a sign that increases the value of an antique book, often multiple times. Affiliation of the book to the well-known owner significantly affects the demand.
