History
The ruins of ancient Roman Albintemelia ( Latin Albintemelium , Albintimilium , Albintimelium , Intemelium ) are located to the east of the modern city. The honor of conquering this Ligur city belongs to the consul Mark Amelia Skavru . In the year of the four emperors, he became the scene of the confrontation between Otho and Vitellius , then was ravaged by invasions of barbarians.
In the 10th century, the Italian king Berengar II made his son Conrad Count Ventimiglia. In the following centuries, the city was ruled either by the counts or by the townspeople themselves. The Genoese Republic became the worst enemy of the commune, which during the attack on the city in 1271 captured its mayor, the troubadour Luca Grimaldi .
Ventimiglia finally became a Genoese in 1505 , although until that time, the House of Savoy and the kings of Naples had claimed possession of the city.
Rulers
The medieval rulers of Ventimiglia and Tenda came from Ivrei dynasty . In 1261, Count Ventimiglia married the daughter of the Nicene Emperor Theodore II of the Laskaris family. In memory of their imperial origins, their descendants bore the double name Lascari di Vintimiglia . One of the representatives of this family brought possession of the Tende in the House of Savoy , having entered into marriage with the “great bastard” Rene in 1498.
