By the beginning of the 19th century, Jimma (called Hirmata ) was a large trading center, a suburb of the capital of the state of Oromo - the city of Jiren. The city was located at the intersection of trade routes, its importance grew over time, and in the middle of the XIX century, 7 km from the city, King Abba Jifar I built the royal palace. In 1932, after the death of Abba Jifar II, the kingdom of Jimm was abolished and its territory was directly subordinated to Ethiopia.

In the late 1930s, the city of Jimma was rebuilt and expanded under the rule of Italian colonialists. The city became one of the centers of Islamic culture in Ethiopia, a school for the study of fiqh was opened [1] . In April 1975, student and peasant unrest suppressed by the army took place in Jimm and the surrounding area. As a result of the clashes, 24 people died, many were arrested [2] .

A few days before the end of the Civil War in May 1991, Jimma was taken by the Revolutionary Democratic Front of the Ethiopian peoples .

Geography

Jimma is located about 250 km southwest of Addis Ababa , at an altitude of 2085 m above sea level [3] . Auetu River flows through the city.

Population

According to the Central Statistical Agency , the city's population for 2007 is 120,960 people, of which 60,824 are men and 60,136 are women. The three main ethnic groups living in the city are: Oromo (46.71%); Amhara (17.14%) and Davuro (10.05%); the share of all other nationalities is 26.1%. Amharic is native to 41.58% of the population; Oromo language - for 39.96%; the remaining 18.46% named another language as their mother tongue. 46.84% of the population are followers of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church ; 39.03% of the population are Muslims and 13.06% are Protestants [4] .

According to the 1994 census, the city's population was 88,867 people, of which 43,874 were men and 44,993 were women.

Economics

The center of the woodworking industry. In the area of ​​the city, Ethiopia's largest coffee plantations. In December 2006, with the funds of the African Development Bank ($ 98 million), construction of a 227 km long highway between Jimma and Misan Teferi began.
