Biography
Franz Defregger, the son of a Tyrolean peasant, sold his inherited father’s yard in 1860 in order to pay a share to his sisters and emigrate to America . However, nothing came of this, and he went to Innsbruck to study with the sculptor and professor of the Innsbruck School of Crafts Michael Stolz .
In the fall of 1860, Franz Defregger was introduced in Munich to Karl Theodor von Piloty . He attended a preparatory class at the Royal School of Art Crafts with teacher Hermann Dick. July 19, 1861 , he passed the entrance exam of the Munich Academy of Fine Arts . There he studied in the painting class with a student of Cornelius German Anschütz .
Munich was followed by Paris , where he independently engaged in the drawing of the human body and thoroughly studied museums, art collections and workshops.
On July 8, 1865 , Defregger returned to Munich and worked on his sketches. In 1867 - 1870 Together with Hans MacArth and Gabriel Max, he worked in the Pilot workshop. His work quickly gained success with the public. In 1878 - 1910 he received at the Munich Academy the title of professor of historical painting in the composition class. Defregger's apprentice was Lovis Corinth . Defregger especially liked portraits, as well as the theme of Tyrolean peasant life that was close to him. However, Defregger's fame was a series of paintings dedicated to the Tyrolean liberation uprising of 1809 and its leader Andreas Gofer . The artist’s best monumental, energetically saturated canvases were the best:
- Before the assault.
- Andreas Gofer in Innsbruck Castle.
- Lunch Prayer (1875).
- The return of the Tyrolean landsturm (1876).
- On the eve of the battle of Mount Isel .
- The last militia (1874).
- Procession of Andreas Gofer to the execution.
Along with paintings by Jordan and Mende on the theme of the Gopher Uprising, the works of Defregger have not only aesthetic, but also historical and documentary value.
In 1883 , Defregger was awarded the noble title and during his lifetime was awarded numerous prizes and awards. One of his students was Hugo Engel. Defregger shared the workshop with other adherent artists of the Munich School of Art, for example, with Rudolf Epp .
Franz von Defregger died on January 2, 1921 at the age of 85. He is buried in a family crypt at the Nordfriedhof cemetery in Munich.
In the St. Petersburg Hermitage, a painting by Defregger, "Poachers in an Alpine Cabin", is presented.
