The United States Central Command ( eng. United States Central Command ; USCENTCOM or CENTCOM ) - a single command within the US Armed Forces , responsible for planning operations and commanding American troops in the event of hostilities in the regions of the Middle East , East Africa and Central Asia . The central command was organized on January 1, 1983 and is one of nine such structures within the US Department of Defense . The headquarters is located at McDill Air Base ( Tampa , Florida ).

Currently, the Central Command is responsible for all US military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan .
The area of responsibility of the Central Command extends to the territory of 21 countries ( Afghanistan , Bahrain , Egypt , Jordan , Iraq , Iran , Yemen , Kazakhstan , Qatar , Kuwait , Kyrgyzstan , Lebanon , United Arab Emirates , Oman , Pakistan , Saudi Arabia , Seychelles , Syria , Tajikistan , Turkmenistan , Uzbekistan ), as well as international waters ( Red Sea , Persian Gulf , western Indian Ocean ).
In 2019, the Supreme Command of Iran recognized the Central Command as a terrorist organization [1] [2] .
