Consuelo Velázquez Torres ( Spanish: Consuelo Velázquez Torres ; August 21, 1916 [3] [4] , Ciudad Guzman , Jalisco , Mexico - January 22, 2005 , Mexico City ) - Mexican pianist and composer, formerly known just like the author of the song " Bésame mucho" .

Biography

Daughter of Isaac Velazquez del Valle and Maria de Jesus Torres Ortiz de Velazquez. From the age of four she lived with her family in Guadalajara . At the age of six, Velazquez began to study music at the music school of Ramon Serratos , studied piano and began to compose songs. At the age of nine, she moved after Serratos to Mexico City, where she completed her performing education. In the future, she also improved her skills under the guidance of Claudio Arrau . In 1938 she made her debut with a recital at the Palace of Arts in Mexico City.

The song “Besame mucho” was written by her in the early 1940s under the influence of the aria from Enrique Granados ’s opera Goyeski. Since 1944, the song has been widely performed in the United States, including the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra. Among other famous songs by Consuelo Velazquez are “To Love and Live” (Amar y vivir), “Cachito”, “Be Happy” (Que seas feliz). In addition to the composer's career, Velasquez starred in films - as an actress (in the film "Carnival Nights" directed by Julio Saraseni , 1938) and as a pianist.

In 1979-1982 was a member of the Mexican House of Deputies. Awarded numerous national and international prizes, an honorary citizen of her hometown of Ciudad Guzman (1981).

Velazquez died due to heart complications that arose after she fell and broke three ribs in November 2004 . In the same year, a memorial plaque was placed on the house where she was born. [five]
