The Vienna Folk Opera , also Volksoper ( German: Volksoper Wien ) - the second opera house in Vienna after the Vienna Opera . History

The theater was built in 1898 . Volksoper was originally named the City Theater of the Emperor’s Jubilee ( German: Kaiser-Jubiläums-Stadttheater ) in honor of the 50th anniversary of the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph I and was intended only for stage plays , but in 1903 operas and operettas began to be staged.

In 1906, the conductor Alexander Tsemlinsky became the first bandmaster . The first productions of Tosca and Salome took place in 1907 and 1910 . respectively. During the First World War, Volksoper became the second most popular opera house in Vienna, but in 1929 changed its repertoire, giving preference to vaudeville . After World War II, the theater turned into an additional stage for productions of the Vienna State Opera , destroyed during the hostilities. In 1955, the Vienna folk opera regained its original role and again took up the production of operas, operettas and musicals. In 1983, Volksoper toured the USSR [1] .
