Sugar Ray is an American rock band from Newport Beach , Orange County , California , founded in 1986 . The band gained the most popularity thanks to the single “ Fly ”, which occupied high positions in the charts and differed from the rest of the group’s tracks in its soft sound. The success of the song led to the fact that when recording the album " 14:59 " Sugar Ray decided to change their musical style from heavy nu metal to more commercial pop rock .

Group History
The early years
Sugar Ray was formed in 1988 [11] under the name The Shrinky Dinx, which was forced to change its name (due to the threat of litigation with the Milton Bradley Company , (manufacturer of the Shrinky Dinks toy) to Sugar Ray in honor of boxer Sugar Ray Leonard (Sugar Ray Leonard).
In 1995, the band released their debut album, Lemonade and Brownies , written under the influence of funk metal , pop rock and alternative rock .
Fly
The first hit with Sugar Ray appeared in 1997 in the form of the song “Fly”, which was included in the Floored album and was performed in conjunction with the reggae singer Super Cat . “Fly” was different from the rest of the album’s tracks and, as a result, was actively broadcast on the radio. Thanks to the success of Fly, the album sold very well and received the status of a double platinum disc . However, by the end of 1997, critics were skeptical, considering Sugar Ray a "one-hit band" unable to release a new successful song. In the same year, Sugar Ray took part in the film Father's Day , which was played by Billy Crystal and Robin Williams .
14:59
In 1999, the album was released at 14:59 , which became a sardonic mockery of the accusations of “one-day”, with a name implying that their “15 minutes of glory” had not expired yet - their “hours of glory” showed 14:59. The song " Every Morning ", which caused a widespread comparison with "Fly", achieved similar success in the spring of 1999, becoming # 3 in the United States . The single “ Someday ”, which came out next, also got an active rotation and reached # 7 in the USA. 14:59 surpassed its predecessor in sales and received the status of a triple platinum disk.
Sugar Ray and In the Pursuit of Leisure
The self-titled 2001 album Sugar Ray brought to light a new hit, “ When It's Over, ” which achieved the same success as the band's previous singles. 2003 album , In the Pursuit of Leisure , as well as the first single from the album, “ Mr. Bartender (It's So Easy), ”got a cool welcome. In 2005, Sugar Ray released a collection of best hits with two new songs, including the single “ Shot of Laughter ”.
Current position
In January 2006, Sugar Ray was released from a contract with Atlantic Records . Currently, the group has taken a break and is writing new material. The new song " Into Yesterday ", released on June 5, 2007 on the soundtrack to the cartoon Catch the Wave! .
The band toured Asia, leading August 8, 2007, SingFest, Singapore's first international music festival. [12]
On March 26, 2008, on the band’s MySpace page, the musicians hinted at a future announcement that would make “all fans very, very happy.” An announcement followed May 16, 2008, stating that Sugar Ray entered the studio on May 19 to record their first album since 2003. The musicians said the band signed a new deal with Pulse Recordings with distribution via Fontana / Universal .
May 18, 2008 Sugar Ray appeared in the final episode of the third season of American Dad in the role of themselves.
March 6, 2009, Mark McGrath announced the release of a new album, called Music for Cougars , which is scheduled for release on July 21, 2009. In May, the first single from this album “ Boardwalk ” was released, and on July 21 the album itself was released.
In early 2011, percussionist Al Keith also joined the group, becoming the fifth member of the group. In March 2012, Murphy Cargis and Stan Fraser left Sugar Ray and were replaced by bassist Justin Bivon and drummer Jesse Bivon, who previously participated in Sugar Ray tours. In the summer of 2012, the band went on a Summerland Tour with bands such as Everclear , Gin Blossoms , Lit and Marcy Playground .
