Biography
He studied theology in Freiburg , Paris and Vienna . Upon graduation, he received a doctorate in theology, as well as law and philosophy. After that, from 1514 to 1520 he was a priest in Salzburg , then for a few months in Dinkelsbühl . Since 1520, the preacher of the cathedral chapter in Würzburg . At that time, he understood the need to combat abuses in the Church and began to preach reform ideas. Especially sharply Speratus opposed celibacy .
He delivered sermons first in Salzburg, and on January 12, 1522 in Vienna in the Cathedral of St. Stephen . Finally, in the Moravian city of Jihlava, his reformist sermons found a grateful audience — the city council gave him the position of city priest. Soon, however, Speratus was arrested by order of the Bishop of Olomouc and sentenced to be burned at the stake. As a result, the reformer was pardoned provided that he left the country.
After visiting Wittenberg in 1524, Sporatus went to Konigsberg to the court of the Duke of Prussia Albert , where he received the post of court preacher. From 1530 until the end of his life, he was the bishop of Pomezani .
