Washington Code

The Washington Codex ( lat. Codex Washingtonianus ; symbol: W or 032 ) is a fifth-century uniquely written manuscript in Greek . The manuscript contains the text of the four Gospels on 187 parchment sheets (21 × 13.5 cm) [1] . Got a name at its place of storage.

Manuscript Features

The text on the sheet is located in one column. The Gospels are arranged in the manuscript in the following (so-called “Western”) order:

  • The gospel of Matthew ;
  • Gospel of John
  • The gospel of Luke ;
  • Gospel of Mark .

At the end of the Gospel of Mark Codex is an insert - "Freer Logion" (Mark 16.14):

And they justified themselves by saying: “This age of lawlessness and unbelief under Satan, which does not allow the truth and power of God to prevail over unclean forces. Therefore, show your righteousness now, ”they said to Christ. And Christ answered them: “The time of the power of Satan has come to pass, but other iniquities are coming. And for those who have sinned, I went through death so that they can return to the true path and not sin anymore; so that they can inherit the spiritual enduring glory of righteousness in heaven ” [2] .

The Greek text of the manuscript reflects several types of text:

  • Matt. 1-28; Luke 8.13-24.53 - The Byzantine type of text ;
  • Mark 1.1-5.30 - the western type of text ;
  • Mark 5.31 - 16.20 - Caesarean type of text ;
  • Luke 1.1 - 8.12; John 5.12 - 21.25 - the Alexandrian type of text ;
  • John 1.1 - 5.11 - a mixed type of text (Alexandrian with Western).

The manuscript belongs to category III Alanda [1] .

History

The manuscript was written at the beginning of the 5th century. Acquired by Charles Freer from Detroit in 1906. Currently, the manuscript is stored in the Museum of the Fryer Smithsonian Institution (06.274), in Washington [1] .
