"Independent Spirit" ( Eng. Independent Spirit ) - American film award , focused primarily on American independent cinema . It exists since 1984 , and at first it was called FINDIE Awards ( Friends of Independents - friends of independents (directors)). It has its current name since 1986 . Since 2006, the prize has been a metal figurine in the form of a bird sitting on a pillar.

"Independent Spirit" is awarded by the non-profit organization Film Independent.
The award ceremony takes place in Santa Monica , California on the eve of the Oscars (until 1999 - on the last Saturday before the Oscars) [1] . Thus, the "Independent Spirit" is, as it were, opposed to the awards of the Academy .
