Biography

In 240, Livius Andronik appeared as an author and actor in the historically first play in Latin, which was performed at the Terentinsky Games . As a poet, Livy attempted to replace the gross national “saturas” with an artistic drama , the concept of which he borrowed from the Greeks.

Livius wrote his tragedies and comedies on plots from ancient Greek mythology - “Achilles”, “Egist”, “Ajax”, etc. He translated “Odyssey” into Latin by means of a Saturnian verse . About 60 fragments of his poetry and fragments of the Odyssey translation have been preserved. It is important that from his texts one can learn about the Greek god which the Roman god corresponded to (Roman Jupiter is the Greek Zeus, etc.).

According to Titus Libya, Livius Andronik also composed the choir hymn to Juno , intended for the performance of 27 girls during the public religious festival of 207. After the successful premiere, the professional guild he headed was called the Collegium of Writers and Actors (Collegium scribarum histrionumque) was solemnly established in the Temple Minerva on the Aventine Hill.
