Story
The experienced detective of the Tokyo police Sato ( Takashi Shimura ) is assigned to a young intern Murakami ( Toshiro Mifune ). At one of the first assignments, the trainee is stolen by a service weapon.
While Murakami is searching, a stolen gun becomes a murder weapon. In desperation, Murakami decides to take extreme measures - disguised as a demobilized military, he, depicting an extreme need, comes in contact with arms dealers. So he manages to find the trail of a thief and a murderer. In the final chase, the thief wounds Sato, but Murakami manages to grab the criminal.
As the story progresses, the similarity of the fate of the criminal and the policeman who persecutes him becomes apparent, which underlines the difference in their characters.
