Biography

Ewald is known for his work on the study of gastric juice and the fact that he proposed the use of a flexible rubber probe for aspiration of gastric contents .

Ewald studied at the Humboldt University of Berlin , the University of Heidelberg and Bonn . In 1870 , in Berlin, he received a doctorate in medicine. Since 1871 - an assistant to the famous German clinician Friedrich Theodor Freriks ( 1819 - 1885 ). Since 1882 - an extraordinary professor at the University of Berlin. From the same year he became editor of the Berlin Clinical Weekly ( German: Berliner klinische Wochenschrift ). Since 1909 - an ordinary professor of honor.

In 1888, he became the chief physician of the Department of Internal Medicine at the Empress Augusta's Berlin hospital . One of the pioneers of gastroenterology, Ewald made the Empress Augusta's hospital a center for digestive diseases.

His name is called “Evald’s test breakfast ” (also called the “ Boas- Ewald test breakfast”), used in the study of gastric juice: 40 (or 200) g of white bread or rolls and 400 cm3. water or tea.
