Starting from 414-413 BC. e. Konon was selected several times as a strategist . Substituting in 406 BC e. Alcibiades in command of the Athenian fleet, Konon could not withstand 70 ships at his disposal confront the Spartan commander Kallikratid , who had 170 triremes , lost half of the fleet and was locked at Mytilene , but the victory of the Athenians at the Arginus Islands freed him.
Fear of responsibility for the defeat at the Egospotam , the fault for which lay on him, made Konon leave Athens and retire to Evagor in Cyprus . When the war between Sparta and Persia began , Conon, with the help of Evagor and Persian money, created a fleet and destroyed the sea power of Sparta at the battle of Knidos (394 BC), expelled the Spartan harmonas from many coastal cities and devastated the shores of Laconia (393 year) BC.). Then he returned to Athens, was received with great honor (393 BC), restored the Long Walls and occupied the same prominent position as Frasibul had before.
Conon's task was to restore the power of Athens over the Aegean islands, and he managed to do a lot to implement this plan. When two years after the battle of Knidos began to cool between Athens and Persia, Conon went to Sardis at the head of the embassy, but the satrap Tiribaz detained him as having changed the Persian cause. Conon did not return to Athens, but he managed to leave for Cyprus to Evagor, where he died. According to another, less reliable news, Conon died in Asia, where the satrap sent him.
His son was the famous Athenian commander Timothy [2] .
