Elia Flacilla, Elia Flakilla ( lat. Aelia Flavia Flacilla , also Flacilla, Placilla, Placilla ; d. 386 [1] ) - the first wife of Theodosius I. Like her husband, a native of Spain . The mother of the emperors Arcadius and Honorius , as well as the daughter of Pulcheria, who died in childhood ( 385 year ).

She was known for her piety and charity. According to Theophanes the Confessor, Flacilla was “ merciful to the poor and who served the lepers and the sick with her own hands ” [2] . The gravestone speeches of St. Gregory of Nyssa for the burial of Pulcheria and Flacilla are preserved.
After the death of Flacilla, the inhabitants of Antioch , disgruntled with taxes, threw off her statue. The emperor “ by his extraordinary love for the most pious Placilla ” wanted to exterminate the Antiochians, but pardoned them at the request of Bishop Flavian [2] . On this occasion, John Chrysostom , who was at that time an Antioch priest, " spoke amazing words of exhortation to those who encroached upon the royal statues " [2] .
Canonized by the Orthodox Church in the face of the blessed , the memory takes place on September 15 (according to the Julian calendar ).
