Dominicans are a people in Latin America , the main population of the island of Dominica in the group of Lesser Antilles . Politically, Dominica is an independent state within the Commonwealth. The total number is 72.8 thousand people (2010 estimate). The majority of believers are Catholics , but there are also Protestants ( Baptists , Methodists , etc.).

Origin
Dominicans are mainly blacks and mulattos , descendants of blacks exported from Africa , partly mixed with the French and British . In addition, in the east of the island, approx. 2 thousand Caribbean Indians .
Language
The population of Dominica speaks Patois , Creole based on French . It was the main spoken language until the mid-20th century. Recently, it has been replaced by English Creole .
Occupation
The main branch of the economy is agriculture , and the main population is employed in it. The main export crop is bananas . Citrus, fruit juices, essential oils, etc. are also exported . Lime , grapefruits , oranges , cocoa , and coconut palm are also grown. The industry is represented only by agricultural processing enterprises.

The local culture is markedly influenced by French culture.
