Story
Robert Garfield, a middle-aged man, receives a baseball glove in the mail that his childhood friend John Sullivan once bequeathed to him. This means that John is dead. Robert is going to a funeral in his childhood town in Connecticut . After the funeral, he learns that his girlfriend of those years - Carol Gerber, also died. Robert goes to the house where he lived as a child. The house is currently abandoned. Robert recalls the events that occurred when he was 11 years old.
At that time, Bobby lived with his mother, the lonely and selfish widow of Liz Garfield. For his birthday, his mother gives Bobby a library card, although the boy dreamed of a bicycle. Mother explains this with a lack of funds, although she does not particularly save on her outfits. One day, the mother takes a guest - an old man Ted Brotigen. While his mother is engaged in work and establishing relations with her boss, Ted becomes Bobby's friend, even promises him little financial support for a seemingly strange job - Bobby should read Teda a newspaper, and at the same time see if strange people in yellow cloaks appeared on the streets of the town . However, this friendship does not cause enthusiasm for Bobby's mother.
Bobby suddenly has strange abilities - at the fair he suddenly begins to guess all the cards from a swindler, so that the latter simply drives him away.
Bobby accidentally finds out that Ted is a clairvoyant. The strange people hunting for him are the Kantoi, the “lower people” who are trying to use his abilities to destroy the world.
Bobby, Carol and John often have conflicts with local city hooligans, but once Ted intervenes in this situation and requires their leader to leave the guys alone, otherwise he promises to tell everyone his sexual secrets. The leader lags behind Bobby and his friends for a while, however, upon learning that Ted must leave, he beats Carol, injuring her. When Ted pushes her dislocated shoulder into place, Bobby's mother comes in and mistakenly decides that Ted is a pedophile. Ted tries to explain to her that he was not going to do anything immoral, while he says that on the weekend Liz was sexually abused by her boss, but this only makes Bobby's mother more angry. She demands that Ted leave her house immediately.
Liz also sees an announcement that Brotigan is wanted and a reward is being promised for help in his capture. She doesn’t hesitate to inform about her former guest. As a result, the agents grab Ted. Bobby is outraged, but can do nothing, and his mother, meanwhile, finds work in Boston and leaves the town. In compensation, she still buys Bobby the coveted bike.
Before leaving, Bobby promises to write Carol, but this does not happen. As a result, upon returning to his hometown, Robert meets only the matured daughter of Carol.
