Fet-Frumos ( rum. Făt-Frumos - knight, young man ; from făt - young man , and frumos - handsome, beautiful ) - a character of Romanian and Moldavian folklore , possessing all the qualities a hero needs: courage, justice, physical and spiritual strength, mind, unshakable love. Fat Frumos (sometimes also called Basil, Philemon, or Alistair Fat Frumos) also has some magical powers and always remains true to the word given to the sovereign he serves. In many tales, the purpose of Fat Frumos is to save Ilyana Kosyzyan ( Frumoase-Frumoselor ).

Peony leaf golden
Proud young man, wait a minute,
Turn to the hellish
What was torn soul in heights.
You only entered the forest,
He led her away ...
Red peony petal
You are that born of a flower.
Young man, look back:
No worse than my anguish.

( Tale "Fat Frumos, the son of a hunter")

Fat Frumos has to overcome trials and obstacles that exceed the capabilities of an ordinary person, but he always worthily goes through all the difficulties. He fights with monsters - a serpent, balaur , travels around our world and the world of spirits ( rum. Tarâmul celălalt ) with his Wonderful Horse ( rum. Calul Năzdrăvan , Gaitan ), who gives him wise advice.

Fat-Frumos from folklore passed into Romanian literature. This character is often found in stories and poems by famous writers such as Mihai Eminescu (Făt-Frumos din Lacrimă “Fat-Frumos from Tears Born”), Tudor Argezi , Nikita Stanescu and others. Also, Fat-Frumos is present in modern folk art as a character jokes .

In 1977, the film “The Legend of the Brave Knight Fat-Frumos ” was shot at the Moldova-Film Studio.

Mentioned in other works

In the book by S. Lukyanenko, “ The Last Watch ”, Fat-Frumos is mentioned in a conversation of the Gorodetsky family:

“Such is the work of dad,” Svetlana calmly explained, grabbing her daughter in her arms. “You know, he is fighting the dark forces.”
“Like Harry Potter,” Nadia said with some doubt, looking at me. I guess I didn’t have enough glasses and a scar on my forehead to match the high image.
“Yes, like Harry Potter, Fat Frumos and Luke Skywalker.”
