Biography

Shirley Manson was born in Edinburgh , Scotland in 1966 , in the family of genetics teacher John and jazz singer Muriel Manson [2] . Shirley was named after her aunt, who in turn was named after Charlotte Bronte ’s short story “Shirley” [10] . Shirley was an average daughter, she has an older sister Lindy-Jane and a younger Sarah [11] . At the age of 7, Shirley learned to play the piano , and later entered the Edinburgh School of Music ( City of Edinburgh Music School ), the music division of Broughton School ( English Broughton High ). Shirley was also a member of Brownie, a scout organization for girls [12] [13] .

Studying in Broughton, Manson became an active member of the local theater club, playing in such performances as The Wizard of Oz and The American Dream. At school, Shirley was attacked for red hair and large eyes. Her classmates gave her the cruel nicknames “Frog Eyes” and “ Bloodhound ”, which is why she began to have problems with performance from the age of 14, although before that she was an excellent pupil [14] . Shirley began depression and self-torture attempts: she carried sharp objects in the insoles of her shoes and cut herself when she felt stress, depression or nervousness [15] [16] .

Shirley Manson suffered from attacks by classmates, until she got in touch with a bully company, and as a result, skipped classes for almost the entire last year of study [17] . She also began experimenting with drugs: smoking marijuana and smelling glue , drinking, stealing in stores, and once even climbed into the Edinburgh Zoo [18] . Shirley managed to volunteer in the cafeteria of the local hospital, then as a waitress in the local hotel, before spending the next five years working as an assistant in the Miss Selfridge store. Ultimately, due to Shirley’s attitude towards customers, she was transferred to the warehouse. Contrary to Shirley’s opinion of her own appearance, for some time she was taken to work as a model for Jackie magazine [19] .

Musical career

Goodbye Mr. Mackenzie

Manson became a regular on the Edinburgh club scene, and, armed with free samples from the Miss Selfridge store, gained popularity as a stylist for several local bands [20] . She sang with the band The Wild Indians, and was a backing vocalist in Autumn 1904, but there was no result from these bands [20] .

Goodbye Mr. Martin Metcalfe met with Shirley at a local theater club Mackenzie with a proposal to join their group. Manson almost immediately began a love affair with Metcalf, but she remained in the group after they broke up and became a prominent member of the group, playing the keyboards , playing backing vocals and doing the economic affairs of the group. In 1984, the debut album Goodbye Mr. Mackenzie Death of a Salesman , who became the first release of Shirley Manson, in whose recording she participated [20] .

MCA Records , Distributor Goodbye Mr. Mackenzie, Manson became interested, and signed with her in February 1993 as a solo artist to circumvent an existing contract with Goodbye Mr. Mackenzie [21] [22] .

Angelfish

After the collapse of Goodbye Mr. Mackenzie part of the musicians formed a new band, called Angelfish , which included the four original members of Goodbye Mr Mackenzie, including Shirley, but already as the main vocalist. The group recorded Angelfish's debut album with Chris Franz and Tina Weymouth from Talking Heads and the single " Suffocate Me ". After the release of their second single, “ Heartbreak To Hate, ” in February 1994 , Angelfish went on tour in the USA , Canada , Belgium and France with Vick Chestnut, playing alongside the opening act for Live in North America . While the tour lasted, a video for the song “ Suffocate Me ” was broadcast on MTV as part of the “120 Minutes” show. Producer and musician Steve Marker saw the video and decided that Shirley Manson was perfect for the vocalist in his new band, Garbage, which already included Butch Wiig and Duke Erickson , but there was no vocalist, although all the participants agreed that they should sing must girl [23] .

Garbage

Butch Vig contacted Shirley Manson. When Manson first spoke to Vig on the phone about his proposal to become a vocalist in the group, she did not even suspect who it was. Alarmed by the bell, the singer contacted her label Radioactive Records and talked about Vig’s proposal. They explained to her that Butch Wiig is an influential producer, and the opportunity to work with him should not be missed [4] . Shirley Manson agreed to take part in the new project [3] [24] , but the first audition was disgusting, and Shirley returned to Angelfish [23] . After the tour with Live, Angelfish ceased operations, and Shirley Manson herself contacted the manager of Garbage and asked for a new audition [4] . She began work on drafts of several songs, and the band invited her to become a full member of Garbage and finish the album together. In August 1994, Radioactive Records gave Shirley Manson permission to work at Garbage.

In August 1995, the band released their debut album, Garbage , which sold over 4 million copies, thanks to such successful singles as “ Only Happy When It Rains ” and “ Stupid Girl ”. Shirley Manson quickly became the face of the group during a tour that followed the release of the album in late 1996 .

Manson became the main songwriter for the second album, Version 2.0 , which repeated the success of its predecessor. Over the next two years, Garbage conducted a tour in support of the album, Shirley worked as a model for Calvin Klein , and the group recorded a theme for a James Bond film. And the whole world is small , becoming the third Scottish performer to perform James Bond after Lulu and Sheeina Watson.

While recording her third album in 2000 , Shirley Manson, one of the first famous artists, started keeping an online diary while she decided to improve her guitar playing for the band's next tour. The third album, Beautiful Garbage , contained Shirley's most open and cordial lyrics. The album did not sell as well as its predecessors, despite the fact that Garbage had a successful world tour in support of the album. During the tour, Manson had problems with her voice, due to which she subsequently underwent a serious operation to remove a cyst on her vocal cords. On Bleed Like Me , the fourth album of Garbage, released in 2005, Manson’s lyrics became more politically oriented, and the album, after the amazing success of the main single “ Why Do You Love Me ”, got the highest positions in the charts. Garbage took an extensive break in October 2005 [25] [26] [27] .

Garbage Break ended in 2007 with a performance at a charity concert in Glendale , organized by Butch Wiig, to help pay for the treatment of throat cancer for musician Wally Ingram [28] [29] . In February, Garbage gathered at Butch Wig’s home studio, GrungeIsDead [30] , where the band recorded several new tracks, including Tell Me Where It Hurts , styled with 1970s pop music [31] , released as a single [ 32] . Also in July 2007, the group released a collection of the best songs Absolute Garbage [33] . Whig said that in 2008, the group could reunite to record their fifth studio album [34] , but this did not happen, and the band members engaged in third-party projects.

In the fall of 2010, Garbage returned to the studio and began work on new material [35] . The group also announced the establishment of its own independent label [36] [37] . On May 14, 2012, Stunvolume Records [38] [39] released its fifth studio album, Not Your Kind of People , on its own label, followed by a world tour [40] .
