Etymology

In the past, the village called Honashen, where "Shen" - arm. “Settlement”, and “khona”, depending on the language of the source, allows for different interpretations (“settlement, dwelling” or “reservoir, well, spring”). In 1925, it was transformed into a city and renamed Martuni, under the pseudonym of party leader A. F. Myasnikov (Myasnikyan) [4] .

In the past, the village was also called "Lower Karanlug" [5] [6] .

The Azerbaijani name of the city does not have a direct relationship to Martuni: it comes from the western suburb of the Khojavend village inhabited by Azerbaijanis during the Soviet years [10] [11] [12] .

The Karabakh War 1991-1994

During the war in Nagorno-Karabakh, during the defense of Martuni, an Armenian from the diaspora Monte Melkonyan who later became the commander of the Martuni detachment was particularly distinguished. According to some reports, residents of Martuni expressed the opinion that the regional center was renamed Monteaberd (in Armenian Մոնթէաբէրդ ), in honor of Monte Melkonyan. The project to rename was not supported by the authorities of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, but the installation of a self-made road sign with the same name was recorded [13] .
