Doping Test August-September 2008

At the beginning of September 2008, a positive result of a doping test with a fighter was announced. Traces of marijuana were discovered in Hakurozan and his brother Rojo . A reanalysis conducted by the WADA laboratory yielded a positive result, and by the decision of the Board of Directors of the Sumo Association, Hakurodzan and his brother Roho were disqualified on September 8, and the president of the Association, teacher of Hakurozan, oyakata Kitanoumi, resigned from his post. The wrestler categorically denies the fact that he used the drug and claims that the examination was specially conducted with violations, as part of the complex intrigue of a group of coaches against Kitanoumi, while Rojo allegedly suffered only because he was his brother. This scandal is a continuation of the story with the undisputed disqualification of Wakanoho . The prosecution of the fighter is not foreseen for the apparent lack of corpus delicti under Japanese law.

In the incident, much remains unclear, therefore, it is not possible to reliably establish the correctness of the parties according to press reports. The wrestler unequivocally declares his innocence, as well as the fact that he did not know anything about the misconduct of Wakanoho, although they were countrymen and friends. Hakurozan was never seen in any way reprehensible, unlike his brother and Wakanoho, who received comments for inappropriate behavior. On the other hand, both the rapid test and sample A sent to the WADA laboratory gave a positive result. The wrestler himself refused to verify the sample, accompanying it with allegations of grave violations (up to forgery) that allegedly occurred during the collection and transfer of samples to the laboratory. A large number of persons were involved in the conflict, including the change of leadership of the Association among the consequences.

In November 2008, the brothers began a legal battle to restore their status. As of June 2010, the process was not completed, the testimonies of the plaintiffs and defendants contradict each other. The brothers refuse a substantial severance pay offered by the Association.
