Battle of Pressburg

The Battle of Pressburg [2] , the Battle of Bratislava [3] or the Battle of Prespork (now Bratislava in Slovakia ) on July 4, 907 , as a result of which the army of Bavaria was defeated by the Hungarians [2] . Sometimes the location of the battle (Brezalauspurc, that is, the “city of Braslav ”) is defined not as Bratislava, but as Zalavar on Lake Balaton in modern Hungary.

Battle

Margrave Luitpold of Bavaria gathered his army and intended to give a decisive battle to the Hungarians, who represented a threat to many countries of Central Europe . The Bavarian army, consisting of three combat units, was defeated at Bratislava Castle , most of the army of Luitpold was killed. Margrave , three bishops and 19 barons were also killed. The transfer of power in the Hungarian Horde in 907 to the youngest son of Arpad Zholt , bypassing his three or even four brothers, suggests that Arpad and his elder sons could also die in this battle.

Consequences

After the battle, the Hungarians occupied the eastern part of present-day Austria and all of Great Moravia , which became the base for campaigns in neighboring countries. The devastating campaigns of the Hungarians in Germany , France , Spain , the Balkans and Italy , which the Hungarians called “kalandozások” (“wanderings”) and considered an integral part of their still semi-nomadic life, continued until 955 , when Otto I the Great defeated them in the battle on the Lech River , which stopped the Hungarian invasions.
