Family
The son of literary critic Arkady Moiseevich Gordin and writer Marianna Yakovlevna Basina . Great-grandfather, teacher Anton Moiseevich Ivanter, was an honorary citizen of Vilna . [2] [3] Grandfather, Moses Gavrilovich Gordin (originally from Rezhitsa ), was a timber merchant and merchant of the first guild in Pskov . [4] Uncle, engineer Arnold Moiseevich Gordin (1903–1975), was an activist of the left opposition and political prisoner. Another uncle, Vladimir Moiseevich Gordin (1906–?), Also a member of the left opposition, was arrested in 1933 and subsequently shot. Life and creativity
He studied at the Faculty of Philology of the Leningrad University , did not graduate. After completing courses of geophysical technicians at the Research Institute of Geology of the Arctic , he worked in geology for five years and participated in an expedition to Verkhoyansk (North Yakutia ).
From 1963 he published poems in Leningrad periodicals, then critical articles and plays on historical themes: “Unarmed Mutiny” (1964, about the Decembrists ), “Your head, emperor!” (1967, staged by the Leningrad Theater of the Young Spectator). In 1972, the book of poems Gordin “Space” was published.
The main genre of creativity Gordin since the mid 1970s. (the book "The Day of December 14" was published in 1973) is historical fiction with a solid documentary basis, as well as essays on historical topics.
In 2004, he became the author and host of a 12-episode documentary television cycle about the battles of Russian nobles "There is a rapture in battle" on the Kultura TV channel [8] .
In 2001, he signed a letter in defense of the NTV television channel [9] .
Criticism
Decembrist historian Vladimir Fedorov, in the monograph “Decembrists and Their Time”, calls Gordin “a writer” and notes that his book “The Mutiny of the Reformers” contains “a number of controversial provisions” [10] . Historian, specialist on the XVIII century Alexander Kamensky in the monograph "From Peter I to Paul I: reforms in Russia of the XVIII century" calls Gordin "a writer" and believes that his book "Between Slavery and Freedom" is filled with "acutely polemical and often unproved assertions" [ 11] .
