The anthem of Italy is one of the main state symbols of Italy, along with the flag and coat of arms . The anthem of modern Italy is the “Song of the Italians” ( Italian: Il Canto degli Italiani ), also known as the “Brothers of Italy” ( Italian: Fratelli d'Italia ) according to the first line and “Anthem of the Mameli” ( Italian: Inno di Mameli ) by name of the author. The text of the anthem was written in the autumn of 1847 by Goffredo Mameli , the music was written by Michele Novaro a little later. The “Song of the Italians” de jure became the national anthem only on November 15, 2017 [1] .

Other Anthem Options
In the period from 1861 to 1946, the anthem of the Kingdom of Italy was the Royal March ( Italian: Marcia Reale d'Ordinanza ). However, it was canceled due to the liquidation of the monarchy in Italy, as well as due to the fact that it was associated with the fascist past of the country. The Brothers of Italy has become the de facto national anthem since 1946. In the 1990s, there was debate about replacing this hymn with another, more suitable, which, in the opinion of the opponents of Fratelli d'Italia, was the anthem Va 'pensiero to the music of Giuseppe Verdi . Proponents of this hymn argued that it did not make sense to change the anthem with a sixty-year history. According to the referendum, the de facto anthem of Italy was left by Fratelli d'Italia.
In 2006, the Italian Senate Constitutional Commission debated a bill providing for the adoption of the text and music of Fratelli d'Italia as a national anthem, and in the same year a bill was prepared to amend article 12 of the Italian Constitution, namely the addition of the paragraph: “The Anthem of the Republic is the "Brothers of Italy" ” [2] . In 2008, similar bills were considered in the Chamber of Deputies [3] , however, the decision to amend the Constitution was finally made only in 2017 [4] .
In June 2012, a bill was approved, which requires schools to teach the text “Brothers of Italy” as a national anthem [5] .
