History
Historically - a specific phenomenon of the Baroque culture: theatrical opening of corpses by doctors in ceremonial costumes.
Thanks to the Italian anatomist Mondino de Luzzi , the practice of public autopsies of dead bodies for the purpose of teaching students medicine was long forbidden by the medieval Catholic Church . In January 1315, with the permission of the Vatican, he performed the first autopsy in many years. At that time, it was considered normal for the professor to sit on a high chair from which he instructed the surgeon ( demonstrator ) what to do. At this time, ostensor indicated the parts of the body under consideration [2] . Mondino’s method was considered innovative, as he personally conducted operations, performed the role of demonstrator, made comments and observations in his notebooks and study guides [3] [4] .
Anatomical theaters appeared in Italy in the XV-XVI centuries. The oldest anatomical theater opened in Padua in 1490.
Anatomical theaters appeared in Russia after the “ Great Embassy ” of Peter I to the Netherlands in Leiden in 1698 [5] .
