The Red Guard ( Hungarian. Vörös Őrség ) - armed detachments of the Hungarian Communist workers. Created in 1919 for the defense of the Hungarian Soviet Republic from local counterrevolutionaries and foreign interventionists . The head was appointed Matthias Rakosi . Later, the Red Guard detachments were transformed into the Red Army . After the fall of the Hungarian Soviet Republic, many Hungarian Red Guards died during the White Terror or fled to Soviet Russia , where they continued to fight on the fronts of the civil war .
