History
In the early 80s, Mercedes-Benz began work on a brand new car, which was named NAFA [2] . This project was initiated in connection with the realities of a crowded city with a catastrophic lack of parking spaces.
At the 1982 anniversary exhibition, Daimler-Benz presented not only the history of its developments, but also the future of the car. About 50 research and development projects were shown, including a compact two-seater Mercedes-Benz NAFA with a length of only 2.5 meters and a width of 1.5 meters high, which contradicts all the principles that the company adhered to before [ 2] .
The only reason hindering the serial production of the car was the mismatch with high safety requirements for the driver and passenger, and this requirement, as you know, has always been the highest priority for the concern [3] . To overcome this shortcoming, engineers needed completely new ideas. The NAFA concept was not forgotten and found application in the prototypes of the 1996 A-Class [2] ( W168 ) and Smart Fortwo .
Description
All the wheels of the car are steered, so that the turning circle is only 5.7 meters. Doors - sliding, when opening the mirrors fold. The concept car was equipped with front-wheel drive, an automatic transmission, air conditioning, power steering and seat belt tensioners [2] . The relatively high landing, low waist line of the body and large glazed surfaces contributed to the excellent all-round visibility of the road situation.
The car was equipped with a four-stroke gasoline engine with 3 cylinders and a working volume of 1 liter. The power unit capacity was 45 hp. (33 kW ) [2] .
