Rambay is an evergreen slow-growing dioecious tree 9-12 m high with a wide dense crown and alternating dark green glossy leaves , with short petioles, 15-33 cm long and 7.5-15 cm wide. Leaf blades from ovoid to lanceolate, with a blunt tip and a solid edge. The flowers are greenish-yellow, without petals, with 4-5 sepals , collected in racemose inflorescences. Fruits are oval, 2.5-4.5 cm long, collected in clusters, with a thin brown-yellow or orange-pink velvety skin, wrinkling when ripe. Inside the fruit contains a translucent, segmented, sweet-sour white pulp, with 3-5 long brown flat seeds.
The birthplace of the plant is the Malay Peninsula . It is found both in the wild and in culture on Kalimantan , Java and some other islands of Indonesia .
The rambay fruits are edible in fresh and stewed form, they are canned, made from them juice and alcoholic beverages.
Rambai is also grown to create a dense shadow.
