Record label ( English record label , trademark of a record company) is a brand created by companies that produce, distribute and promote audio and sometimes video recordings (mainly music videos and live recordings of concerts ) on media of various formats (including records , CD cassettes , CDs , mini-disks , SACD , DVD ; with the development of the Internet, digital distribution and multimedia streaming have also gained popularity).
Record labels also ensure copyright compliance, the search and subsequent development of new musicians. The term "record label" comes from a circular label in the center of a vinyl record that displays the manufacturer's name, as well as other information [1] .
Industry
Currently, many record companies are huge corporations that own a large number of record labels. For example, the company Warner Music Group owns such labels as Atlantic Records , Reprise Records , Maverick Records . For the most part, these companies are located in Los Angeles , New York and Nashville [1] . The largest corporations in the field of recording, the so-called major labels ( English major label ), are Universal Music Group , Sony Music Entertainment and Warner Music Group (so-called " Big Three Record Labels ").
Recently, there has also been a surge in independent labels, so-called indie labels , which are an alternative to the mainstream from major labels [2] . At the same time, there is often cooperation between major and indie on mutually beneficial terms, in particular, they can execute one or other stages of production, distribution and promotion of music by order of each other .
At the end of the first decade of the 21st century , with the development of Internet technologies, in addition to traditional labels that produce music on traditional media , a new type of labels appeared, so-called no-labels , which distribute music in digital audio formats (mainly MP3 ), giving access to directly download these files [3] . At the same time, no-labels parallel online releases often produce limited editions of compact discs and other popular storage media ( flash disks , etc.), distributing them mainly by mail. .
