Biography

Childhood and Youth

Antonio Meneghetti was born on March 9, 1936 in Avezanno in a simple family of Pietro Meneghetti and Anna Castellani, the first of nine children. At 11 years old, parents give their son upbringing and training in the Roman Catholic Church. [9]

Meneghetti studies in Assisi , then Gubbio , Spoleto and Rome , joins the Franciscan Order Lesser Conventional Brothers . While studying at the seminary, she also studies painting , restoring the frescoes of Giotto , Cimabue , Michelangelo , Raphael , Masaccio , Titian . This work arouses his genuine interest in art and in his free time he visits craft workshops, including Murano glass factories in Venice and ceramic workshops in Derut. [9]

From a young age, Meneghetti learns to play the organ and piano , the Gregorian chorus (his teachers are L. Perosi, D. Stella, L. Refice, B, Rizzi). He also studied Latin , Ancient Greek and Aramaic . [9]

In the 60s, he left the Franciscan order and the city of Spoleto and became a parish priest in the village of San Giovanni Paganica, located near Montereale . At this time, he contains a sick mother with eight minor brothers and sisters. [10] [11]

On the path of pastoral service, Meneghetti is faced with mental problems and suffering of people, begins to ask existential questions. He gets acquainted with the works of Edmund Husserl , in which the philosopher spoke about the crisis of science, about the need to update philosophy, and in the emerging psychology he saw epistemic science, able to re-substantiate and lead to authenticity the very concept of science. Husserl’s thoughts then had a significant impact on Meneghetti [12] , he begins to study psychology, sociology, philosophy and other sciences.

Professional Development

At the age of about 30, Meneghetti studies at several faculties of the famous universities of Rome and from 1967-1971 he defended a doctorate in theology at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome , in philosophy and social sciences at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome , and also received a diploma about higher education (bachelor) in philosophy at the Catholic University of Milan Sacra Cuore, and a little earlier - a diploma of a librarian in the Vatican , which opened access to the Vatican Apostolic Library , which is rich in The largest collection of manuscripts from the Middle Ages and Renaissance . [eleven]

At the same time, Meneghetti studies various scientific schools of psychology and psychiatry. He attends specialized psychology courses in London (Freudian psychoanalysis and the Tavistock hospital , where he works as an assistant), Jacques Lacan's seminars in Paris , and also meets with students of Freud, Adler, and Jung. Victor Frankl 's approach, which Meneghetti meets in Vienna, made a special impression. In 1968 he studied at the Jung Institute in Zurich ( Switzerland ). [13]

In 1970, the dean of the Faculty of Philosophy of the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas Abelardo Lobato Casado invites Antonio Meneghetti to give a course of psychology to students receiving a second higher education . [10] Lobato recalled:

Meneghetti proved to be an excellent teacher. Many students asked him to become the supervisor of their graduation work ... He had many students, he was successful because he had a rare charm and liked the students. His charisma lies in the fact that, putting forward a thesis, he develops and argues it to the end .

- [10]

From 1970 to 1972 , Meneghetti taught the Basics of Pastoral Psychology on the psychology of a clergyman, and from 1972 to 1973 he taught the course “Human Ontopsychology” and leads the seminar “Client-centered Therapy of Rogers” at Thomas Aquinas University. After one of the lectures, a student from Brazil, Alesio Vidor approached Meneghetti and said that what they heard today was no longer Rogers' theory, but something new. It was already ontopsychology. [11] [13]

Psychotherapeutic Practice

While teaching at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas of Aquinas, Meneghetti began a psychological practice, and on November 15, 1972 he opened the Center for Ontopsychological Therapy in Rome on ul. Marco Polo, 104, where a one-year course of personal and practical training in psychology was opened, a two-year course of ontopsychological psychotherapy, and later in 1973 three-year training courses for psychologists and psychotherapists were organized. [13]

In 1972, Meneghetti left the Catholic Church , and in 1973 he stopped teaching at the University of Thomas Aquinas, explaining this decision with a desire to devote himself completely to clinical practice in order to test his theory:

If what I said is true, then the sick will recover .

- [13]

Meneghetti devotes 10-12 hours a day to working with patients, often with severe mental disorders , he is addressed with problems of sexual dysfunctions, drug addiction and many others.

Among his patients were schizophrenia patients. This disease represented the greatest challenge at that time. In the 60s, the antipsychiatry movement appeared [14] , in Italy there was also an active discussion around the methods of psychiatry, about the conditions of patients in psychiatric hospitals, the movement “ Democratic Psychiatry ” [15] , one of the initiators of which was Franco Bazaglia , who advocated a humane attitude to the mentally ill and the refusal of their forcible isolation, as well as seeking to close state psychiatric hospitals. [16] [17] Meneghetti shares criticism of the methods of psychiatry of that time, among which were such tools as electroshock and lobotomy , but does not believe that the solution to the problem lies in the plane of discussion about closing hospitals and releasing patients, but seeks to find a way to cure schizophrenia. [13]

Meneghetti did not use either medication or coercive methods, but acted on patients with the help of the word, but this dialogue was not similar to the technique of psychoanalysis or other psychological schools. In the course of clinical practice, he concludes that his method yields positive results. Then Meneghetti begins to formulate his principles and discoveries at specially organized scientific conferences on onpsychology, where specialists from other schools are also invited. Subsequently, the materials of these conferences will be published in the scientific journal “Ontopsychology - Psychic Causality in a Human Event” (from 1988 it became known as the “New Ontopsychology”), and in a revised form - in books. [13] [18]

Representation of Ontopsychology Theory

Since 1973, Meneghetti has been organizing meetings that later became congresses on onpsychology, to which psychologists and students are invited to present and discuss the results of psychotherapeutic practice . The first meeting was held from September 25 to 27, 1973 at the Padre Lombardi Congress Center in one of the Roman castles in Rocca di Papa , in which representatives of six countries took part. [19] At the III Congress of Ontopsychology in Piediluco in 1975, the problem of neurosis and schizophrenia was considered , part of the materials of the congress was included in the book “Clinical Ontopsychology” in the chapter “Multifactorial etiology of neurosis and schizophrenia”. In 1976, at the IV Congress in Grottaferrata, Meneghetti presented the audience with the concept of a semantic field. The following congresses, which take place annually, included the technique of reading the unconscious - immunagogy, the psychological structure of a person’s personality, including such instances as the “A priori Self,” onto In-se, and the deviation monitor. In 1980, at the Rome Cavalieri Hilton Hotel in Rome, Meneghetti introduced the clinical method of therapeutic residence, which is a synthesis of several ontopsychological instruments. The 1980 Congress was a kind of final stage of a decade of practical activity designed to show that the exact application of the theory leads to the elimination of psychological problems. [19]

In this decade, the first books and monographs of A. Meneghetti are published, outlining the theory and practice of ontopsychology: “Cinema therapy” (La cineterapia, 1972), “Ontopsychology of a person” (Ontopsicologia dell'uomo, 1973), “Psychosomatica” (La psicosomatica, 1974), “Monitor of deviations in the human psyche” (Il monitor di deflessione nella psiche umana, 1975), Clinical Ontopsychology (Ontopsicologia clinica, 1978), Ontopsychological Pedagogy (Pedagogia ontopsicologica, 1979). [twenty]

He was married, two daughters.

In 1981 , A. Meneghetti, together with his wife Loretta Lorenzini, were arrested on charges of a criminal conspiracy, unauthorized use of names, fraud and violence and spent some time behind bars. [21]

1998 - the beginning of the international professional retraining program specializing in Ontopsychology (a joint project of St. Petersburg State University, the International Association of Ontopsychology (Rome, Italy) and the Slavic Association of Ontopsychology (Moscow, Russia)).

March 2004 - the official opening of the Department of Ontopsychology at the Faculty of St. Petersburg State University.

May 27, 2004 - the opening ceremony of the Department of Ontopsychology in the Assembly Hall of the Twelve Colleges Building - the main administrative building of St. Petersburg State University - in the presence of Professor A. Meneghetti, Rector of St. Petersburg State University L. A. Verbitskaya and Dean of the Faculty of Psychology L. A. Tsvetkova.

Creating Ontopsychology

The greatest interest of Antonio Meneghetti has always been caused by man and philosophy , in particular the critical problem of cognition . The works of E. Husserl influenced his intellectual crisis . “Why does man not know the truth ? Truth exists because I as a person exist. If I don’t know her, then I’m sick. ” “The error does not depend on nature . It depends on the historical moment. Which one? ”

According to Meneghetti, he never thought about creating a new science , but realized that he had opened a new path during the period when he was engaged in clinical psychotherapy. For the first time, the term “ontopsychology” (the psychology of being ) was used by Meneghetti after familiarizing himself with the materials of the congress held in 1954 with the participation of famous psychologists K. Rogers , R. May, A. Maslow. It was during this congress that the crisis of psychology was discussed, the three forces of psychology — psychoanalysis, behaviorism , humanistic psychology — were singled out and the emergence of a new fourth force of psychology, the name of which — ontopsychology — was proposed by Anthony Sutich. Formally, the birth of ontopsychology is associated with the publication of Meneghetti's book “Human Ontopsychology” in 1972 .

For ten years, Meneghetti has been devoting himself to intensive activities in the field of clinical psychotherapy . (from 10 to 12 psychotherapeutic sessions per day), comprehending the causes and eliminating the most severe chronic symptoms of various psychosomatic diseases . According to Meneghetti himself, he made three main discoveries: a semantic field, a deviation monitor, and ontos (see ontopsychology )

From 1981 to 1986, he tested the ontopsychological method as applied to people of different ethnicity and culture . Since the 90s . the ontopsychological method is used in the field of entrepreneurship and business consulting, as well as in sociology .

In 2004, the Department of Ontopsychology was opened at the Faculty of Psychology at St. Petersburg State University , Russia . In 2008, the Center for the Study of Ontopsychology was opened in Brazil , named by the Faculty of Antonio Meneghetti [1] (unavailable link from 11/05/2013 [2355 days]) .

Dream Interpretation

According to Meneghetti, to determine the positivity or negativity of a dream, one needs to answer the question: what real benefit does this image bring for the dreamer from a psychological and, above all, from a biological point of view? All that increases the dreamer's health and profit is good, then images of fruits, milk, clear water, fish, delicious food, etc. appear in dreams. All that worsens his well-being is bad, such symbols will be paper, uniforms, insects, toilet, etc. For mental formation, night is more important than day; he who becomes the master of his night gains power over his own life.

Leader Psychology

OntoArt

Meneghetti is the founder of the OntoArt school ( 1976 ) - a new direction in art , an honorary member of the Senate of the International Academy of Modern Art. His paintings and sculptures were exhibited at solo exhibitions in prestigious art galleries in Rome, Venice, Sao Paulo , Vienna, and St. Petersburg .

International activities

In 1989, Meneghetti met with representatives of the Leningrad School of Psychology - B. F. Lomov (they met at the 1st European Congress on Applied Psychology), A. A. Krylov , and Yu. M. Zabrodin . Subsequently, at the invitation of Soviet psychologists, he came to Russia. The result of this collaboration was the opening in 1998 of the specialization "Ontopsychology" at the Faculty of Psychology of St. Petersburg State University, and later on the Department of Ontopsychology in 2003 . Today, Meneghetti's area of interest includes economics and sociology . In the field of economics, he singled out the subjective criterion of an entrepreneur, which indicates a successful result of economic rationality. In the field of sociology, he speaks of the need to conduct research not so much on primitive man, or statistical behavior, as on the intentionality of human nature and historical contradictions with the environment. Meneghetti regularly takes part in international conferences, special sessions. On his initiative, 16 international congresses on ontopsychology were held, including one world congress ( Moscow , 1997 ).
