Zhambyl district ( kaz. Zhambyl audany ) is an administrative unit in the south-west of the Almaty region of Kazakhstan . The administrative center is the village of Uzynagash .

Geography
The relief of the southern part of the territory is mountainous (western spurs of the Zailiysky Alatau , eastern spurs of the Chu-Ili mountains ), in the north it is flat (the Bozoy plateau, Karaoi valley). Reserves of non-ferrous metals , limestone , building materials, and others have been explored. The climate is continental: average January temperatures in the north are −12 ° C, in the south −8 ° C; July in the south 20 ° С, in the north 25 ° С. The average annual rainfall is from 200-300 mm in the plain to 500 mm in the mountainous part. The rivers flow through the district: Karagaly, Uzynagash, Karakastek, Zhamanty, Balazhan, Akterek, Yrgayty and others, the waters of which are used for irrigation of arable lands, irrigation of pastures. Soils are meadow black chernozem , dark chestnut, chestnut , gray earth , mostly saline . Wormwood, feather grass, meadowsweet, summer grass, saxaul and other sands grow in the sand. Roe deer, saiga, argali, wolf, fox, hare, and badger live in it [5] .
History
The district was formed in 1928 [5] . Initially, it was called Kasteksky district . In 1939 it was renamed in honor of Dzhambul Dzhabaev in the Dzhambul region . On May 4, 1993, by a resolution of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of Kazakhstan, the transcription of the name of the Dzhambul district in Russian was changed to Zhambyl district [6] .

Economics
In the region there are about 40 industrial enterprises (Zhartas LLP, Kargaly JSC and others) for the production of woolen fabrics, flour, building materials, etc. Agriculture specializes in irrigated and rainfed farming and animal husbandry. They grow crops, sugar beets, vegetables, potatoes, perennial herbs. Cattle, sheep and goats, horses and birds are bred [5] .
There are 3 historical and literary museums in the area; about 900 historical and archaeological sites. A railway (Uzynagash, Shilyuastau, Kopa railway stations) and the Almaty – Bishkek highway [5] pass through the district.
